Galatasaray Sports Club owns the Galatasaray Islet (Turkish: Galatasaray Adasi), a small island in the Bosphorus strait off the Kurucesme neighborhood in Istanbul, Turkey.
Galatasaray Island Characteristics
Bars, six restaurants, and two swimming pools make this building, located just north of the Bosphorus Bridge, an attractive option for visitors. The free ferry service connects the island, which is only 165 meters (541 feet) from the European coast.
Beginning in the fall of 2002, construction began on what will eventually become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks: the Galatasaray Islet. After a complete renovation, it reopened in July 2007 as a recreational and entertainment hub for residents of Galatasaray and all of Istanbul.
On October 4, 2007, a fire started in the kitchen chimney, destroying two restaurants and causing extensive damage to four others on the island.
Sultan Abdulhamid’s granddaughter, Nilhan Osmanoglu, announced in 2017 that she intends to make a future claim to the islet.
History of Galatarasay Island
The Ottoman-Armenian court architect Sarkis Balyan (1835–1899) was given the islet by Sultan Abdülaziz (reigned 1861–1876) in 1872 to use as his residence. In 1874, Russian-Armenian painter Ivan Aivazovsky stayed in the Sarkis islet’s mansion during one of his many trips to Istanbul, where he completed several paintings commissioned by the Sultan for the Dolmabahçe Palace.
Known as the “Sarkis Bey Islet” during his lifetime, his legal heirs rented it out to the Istanbul passenger ferry company “Şirket-i Hayriye” after World War I, where it served for many years as a coal depot.
Galatasaray S.K. bought the islet in 1957 and since then has used it for offices and sports complexes.
From 1957 to 1968, the islet’s swimming pool was the home of the school’s water polo team.
